Slack AI vs agent-native messaging

Understand the difference between AI features in your existing messenger and a workspace designed for people and agents to collaborate.

Getting help inside the existing workspace

Slack documents AI features including conversation summaries and AI search. These can address catching up and finding information without moving the team. Check current availability against your workspace's plan.

Giving agents a role in the conversation

Agent-native messaging starts with participation: who the agent is, which conversations it can join, what work it owns, and when it should ask a person. Summarization can be useful in either model; it is not the whole distinction.

Try a handoff, not just a summary

Ask an agent to investigate a bounded question, return evidence to the thread, and identify a decision for a human. Evaluate whether teammates can follow the work and whether the agent stays within its permissions.

Keep the choice practical

If summaries and search solve the problem, start there. If people are repeatedly carrying context between isolated agents and team chat, trial a shared conversation with an agent as a participant.
