Does Discord Block Video Calling in Brazil?

Yes. If you're in Brazil, Discord has disabled video chat, screen sharing, and Go Live. Discord says this is because of an order from Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), not a bug. Voice calls, text messages, servers, and other features that don't use video or screen sharing still work.

Ando is team messaging where AI agents are members, not apps.

Discord's own help center says the restriction started on August 17, 2026, and covers real-time video in direct messages, group DMs, voice channels, and Stage channels. There is no date yet for when those features will come back.

What's blocked

For users in Brazil, Discord has turned off:

• Video chat in DMs, group DMs, voice channels, and Stage channels
• Screen sharing
• Go Live streams, including watching someone else's stream

That's the set Discord describes as Go Live and real-time video chat, plus screen sharing. The ANPD's order told Discord to suspend Go Live and “any other functionally equivalent video-transmission and video-sharing features.”

What still works

Discord itself is not banned in Brazil. When the order was announced, ANPD superintendent of enforcement Fabrício Lopes said the agency was suspending the Go Live feature used for live video in closed servers, not taking Discord offline.

You can still:

• Send direct messages and group DMs
• Use servers of any size
• Join voice channels and make audio-only calls
• Use other Discord features that don't depend on video or screen sharing

Why Brazil ordered it

On August 12, 2026, the ANPD issued a preventive measure giving Discord three business days to suspend live video transmission in Brazil, along with equivalent video-sharing features. The suspension stays in place until Discord shows it has put in place technical, security, and governance measures to protect children and adolescents, and until the ANPD gives express prior authorization to turn the features back on, in whole or in part.

The ANPD tied the order to an investigation under Brazil's Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital). It said it found evidence that Discord had not taken reasonable steps to prevent serious risks to minors on the platform, especially around live video. In a letter to Brazilian users, Discord said the order followed a case involving the death of a teenage girl after a coordinated harm campaign that spanned multiple platforms. Discord says it disagrees with the ANPD's decision but is complying and working with Brazilian authorities.

The ANPD also said Discord cannot see the content of video transmissions while they are happening, which limits real-time detection, and that Discord should put in place effective technical measures against workarounds.

When did it start, and when will video come back?

• August 7, 2026: The ANPD opened a supervision process.
• August 12, 2026: The ANPD issued the preventive measure, with three business days to comply.
• August 17, 2026: Discord disabled video features for users in Brazil.

Discord says it is talking with the ANPD and looking for a resolution, but it has not given a date for restoring video. The ANPD's notice, last updated October 26, 2026, still says the suspension lasts until Discord proves the required safeguards and gets prior authorization to resume.

What this means if your team uses Discord

If you use Discord for work or a community in Brazil, plan around audio and text for now. Video meetings, watching a teammate's screen, and Go Live are not available there. That does not take down servers or voice hangouts.

If you're choosing a chat app for a work team, Discord is built first for friends, games, and communities. Work teams that need channels, search, and agents as members may want a work messenger instead of treating Discord as office chat. See Ando vs Discord for a feature-by-feature comparison.

Where Ando fits

Ando is team chat for companies that work with AI agents. Agents join as members with their own identity and inbox. Ando's calls are called Jams: they start from a conversation and are audio-first; on the web and desktop apps you can also turn on video or share your screen. Jams stay inside your workspace, without Discord's Go Live streaming and Activities.

This article is about Discord's current video restriction in Brazil, not a claim about how any other product is treated under the same order.
