Slack for Startups: what happened, and what to use instead

Slack's own startup offer is no longer on its pricing page. Partner perk programs still advertise 25% off a first year of Pro or Business+. Here is what we could verify, what Slack costs today, and how to decide.

What happened to the Slack for Startups program

Slack used to run a startup program with discounted paid plans for young companies. On November 5, 2026, slack.com/pricing listed no startup program or startup discount; the only special pricing it mentioned was for qualified nonprofits and educational institutions.

What we couldn't verify: we found no Slack announcement saying when or why the program ended. Third-party perk directories describe it as discontinued, for example guptadeepak.com (checked October 12, 2026, by its own note). Treat that as a directory's reading, not Slack's statement.

Slack startup discounts that still exist

Slack discounts now come through partners: banks, card issuers and accelerator perk portals. These are the ones whose pages we could open, quoted as they read on the date checked.

Other perk directories, including GVN, list similar Slack offers behind sign-ins we could not check. Each portal sets its own eligibility, so read the terms before you upgrade.

Slack's free plan for startups: 90 days of history

For a few weeks, often yes. On November 2, 2026, Slack's free plan kept messages saved and searchable for 90 days and allowed up to 10 apps (slack.com/pricing).

The 90-day window is the limit a startup feels first. The decision you made in month one is out of search by month four, which is about when your first hires want to read it. If your history matters, budget for a paid plan or pick a tool whose free tier keeps it.

What Slack costs today

Regular prices from slack.com/pricing, in US dollars per user per month, on November 2, 2026:

PlanBilled annuallyBilled monthly
Pro$7.25$8.75
Business+$15$18

The pricing page was also showing a three-month introductory discount on monthly billing. A partner perk takes 25% off for twelve months on top of the regular price, so a 10-person team on Pro billed annually would pay about $54 a month instead of $72.50 during the discount year.

Alternatives to Slack for startups

Slack is still the default for most startups: it has the biggest app ecosystem and most hires know it. If you are deciding between Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Discord, Mattermost, Pumble and Ando, the startup chat app comparison covers each with prices from its own page, and Slack alternatives covers the categories.

Frequently asked questions

Is Slack for Startups discontinued?

Slack's pricing page listed no startup program on November 5, 2026, and perk directories describe the program as discontinued. We found no Slack announcement confirming when it ended. Partner portals still offer 25% off the first 12 months of Pro or Business+.

Is Slack's free plan enough for a startup?

It works for a small team's first weeks. Messages stay searchable for 90 days and you can connect up to 10 apps, so older decisions drop out of search as the company grows.

How do I get a Slack startup discount?

Through a partner. Mercury and Builtfirst-powered accelerator perk portals listed 25% off the first 12 months of an upgrade to Pro or Business+ for companies with no more than 200 employees.

How much does Slack cost for a startup?

Pro is $7.25 per user per month billed annually or $8.75 monthly. Business+ is $15 annually or $18 monthly, before any partner discount.

Does Ando have a startup program?
