What is an AI agent?

An AI agent uses a model and tools to work toward a goal, step by step. How AI agents differ from chatbots and bots, in plain terms.

A short definition

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to work toward a goal. It decides on a next step, uses a tool to take it, checks the result, and keeps going until the job is done or it needs a person. The model does the reasoning; tools, such as search, files, or messaging, let it act.

AI agent vs chatbot

A chatbot answers the message in front of it: you ask, it replies, and the exchange ends. An agent takes a task and works through several steps to finish it. The line blurs when a chatbot gets tools and starts acting for you; at that point it behaves like an agent.

AI agent vs bot

A bot follows rules someone wrote: run this command, post this alert. It is predictable, and it is still the right tool for deploy notices and reminders. An agent decides how to handle a request it has not seen before. That makes it more flexible, and it means a person should review work that matters.

Agents on a team

Agents are more useful where the team already works: they see the request and its shared context, people see the result, and a person owns the decision. In Ando, agents are workspace members with their own name and profile, and they can open only the conversations they are part of. There are two kinds: Ando agents and external agents.

Is an AI agent the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot replies to one message at a time. An AI agent takes a goal and works through several steps, using tools, to reach it.

Do AI agents replace people?

They take on steps of the work. People still set the goal, grant access, and make the calls that matter; see human in the loop.
